Review:
This is the perfect example of how to write the first book in a ya series or any series for that matter. It is set in a fantasy world which dose require allot of world building, but Sarah j mass got the perfect blend of action, character development and world building spot on. This is a new YA series (I suppose soon we wont be able to call it new as the fourth book will be coming out in september. And thats including a novel bind up.) but it doesn't feel like it has been around for that long. The love triangle doesn't take away from the action and adventure in this book, but i personally love it. It is not quite at the level of Tessa, Jem and Wills love triangle from the infernal devices but it is more than a clary, simon and Jace. (I feel like i am draw a lot of comparisons between the Cassandra clare books but they are nothing alike)
Celanean is the perfect female protagonist, she is like able even with her vocation as an assassin as she is not vicious or cruel about her killing 'she dose what she needs to do to survive' is how she puts it. She has the right levels of kick-assery and girl ness. Literally at the end of one chapter she'll be beating up a man twice her size and double her weight then and the start of the following chapter she will be trying on elegant ball gowns. She is smart and witty and doesn't rely on male support like main female protagonists do. I imagined her across between a Tessa grey from the infernal devices with her girly and snarky personality one minuet and a black widow from the avengers, like badass killing machine the next minuet. Prince Dorian i though was a very generic rebellious prince like you get in many other books her reminded me allot of Kai from the lunar Chronicles they were very similar. And Chaol was a stern man but he slowly warmed up and he had the most character arch throughout the whole book.
There are certain books that you can not put down, when you do it plays on your mind until you pick it back up. These books are the books that are big and loved by all for example divergent, harry potter, percy jackson and the hunger games this is certainly one of those books. There is so much action and different things going on you cant put it down. There is not a dull moment in this book therefore the pace and tempo of the book is so fast that you feel if your not reading it at that moment you could miss something because you are so submerged and involved within the story. Once you pick this book up you will not regret it and you'll never look back.
May the odds be ever in you favour
Love Bathy
