The Final Empire, book review!

Title: The Final Empire, Mistborn
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Publisher: Gollancz
Rating: 4 stars

Brief summery: For a thousand years skaa have lived as slave, for a thousand years the lord ruler has reigned without challenge. Until now a uprising is being planned to other throw the lord ruler by a bunch of miss fits with a criminal background and some helpful powers.

Thoughts in a sentence:
Kathy: (kathy did read this as high fantasy isn't really her thing)
Bee: absolutely amazing and definitely lives up to the hype.

Review:
The world that brandon Sanderson has created for this book is original and wonderful. This is a world unlike any I have read before within fantasy. He is so descriptive about everything and you can picture it all with such ease that you don't notice the world being build around you as you read. I think the only thing that was hard about the world building to get you head around was the allomancy (the kind of power that some people have, to be able to control metals) and remembering the names of all the pairs. My one complaint was the pacing of the book varied between slow and fast paced there was no in between, one moment we were have huge exciting battles with their magical metal powers, then we spent a whole chapter sitting at a table talking about things that had already happened. But i will forgive that for the great writing and plot to the book.

In this story we got two points of view kelsier a world renound crimal master mind. He made the plot progress allot through this book and implemented the plan and was very much an older brother figure towards vin. Vin a young girl who was very much our exposition bus but that is okay because every book has that character that we learn everything through. She was a poor girl who was trained not to trust anyone which made her interesting because she was suspicious of everyone and slowly let go of her past and came into her own and by the end of the book she was a fully fledged bad ass. Also this book had a huge supporting cast but none of them were unlikeable and I really enjoyed that. Final i thought  the lord ruler was an intreaging and powerful villan who was an actual threat to there lives.

The book was wrapped up so well it could even work as a stand alone I'm personally really excited to see where it is going to go. And am almost certain that I'm going to love it as much as i loved this book. And i know brandon Sanderson has a few series so I'm wondering if they also take place in this world, because i think that would be so amazing and do able. Overall i personally will recomeade this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy. I am going to be reading the sequel as soon as possible.

Book Review: Isla and the Happily Ever After

Title: Isla and the Happily Ever After
Author: Stephanie Perkins
Publisher: Usborne
Rating: 5 stars

Brief Summary: Isla has had a crush on Josh for as long as she can remember, so when she unexpectedly finds him in her local cafe she is surprised and excited to see him. As Isla and Josh's relationship progresses we share their struggles of being countries apart and longing for each other. Will it end with a happily ever after?

Thoughts in a sentence:
Kathy: Beautiful and sad but leaves you feeling overjoyed, a perfect conclusion to this series.
Bee: A new adventure with new characters but full of cute references from the previous books, the happiest book of them all.

Review: Out of all three books in this series Isla has to be my favorite (and that's saying a lot because I loved the others). I loved that Isla and Josh's relationship developed very quickly so that we could see more of their lives. Both these characters were lovable and the reader roots for them to be together the whole way through. I love being so attached to the characters because it makes the book seem more real and makes it more enjoyable. The setting for this book was mainly in Paris at their boarding school, which was the setting for the first book. I love reading about them walking the streets because it seems so realistic and I want to go and visit all the places they go to. All of Stephanie's books make the reader want the relationship the main characters have, especially in Isla because Josh is artistic and pours his heart out for Isla, he would do anything for her.
I also love that Isla enjoys reading because it made me understand her more. She doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, partly because she doesn't want to be bored and tied down, she wants to be free and adventurous like the characters in her books. I think this makes Isla easy to relate to for many young readers, it reassures them that you don't have to have a set plan for the future because you never know what may happen in your life that could change every decision you make. Josh teaches Isla to take risks because it will help determine who she is and life isn't meant to be easy and laid out, life is unpredictable.
I particularly loved the ending to this book, there were so many shocks and surprises that I was crying of happiness. It really made me so unbelievably happy catching up with the previous main characters and seeing them achieve their goals because I love them all. The final line to this book was perfect and couldn't have left me feeling any happier. I love how there are little links from the previous books intertwined in this one, like point zero, it made it feel even more special.
I know that I will be rereading these books a lot because they are extremely enjoyable and easy to read. The characters are lovable and will never grow old. These books will stay with me forever and are some of my absolute favorites.

More Than This Book Review

Title: More Than This
Author: Patrick Ness
Publisher: Walker Books
Rating: 4.75 stars

*Picture below*

Brief summary: Seth committed suicide alone in the sea. So when he wake's up in his childhood home he is scared and confused. In a cracked, deserted version of his old home town Seth has no one to talk to or ask for help. Is he in heaven, is he in hell ? Seth doesn't know but just when he thinks all hope is gone he sees a van and it's Driver . But who is this mysterious Driver, and will it give Seth answers for the silent town?

Thoughts in a sentence:
Kathy: Scary concept but really eye opening and spectacular.
Bee: Holds mystery and suspense throughout and leaves you wanting more.

Review: This book starts off slow paced, and is hard to understand and connect to at first. There are a lot of chapters where not much happens, so it lost some of my interest. However the whole idea of Seth being alone in this deserted town made me read on because I wanted to know why the town was like this and if it was the real world. After reading the whole book I appriciate the start more. I think that the slow pacing reflects how Seth is feeling and emphasies how much a human needs to survive, not only food and water but company. Without other people Seths life is solw and he has nothing to do in all his spare time.
Throughout the book we hear Seths voice and understand his way of thinking. In this world with so much uncertainty Seth expects something bad to happen whenever things have been going smoothly. I think this shows us that because he never had a relaxing childhood he was always on edge and expecting something bad to happen. The scary thing about this world is that whenever he thought something bad would happen, it did.
I think the idea of a world where everybody is living in a virtual reality is very realistic and easy to believe. I can see video games being made that for the "ultimate experience" allow you to become an actual part of the game. Humans would much rather live in a game where everything is easily avaliable and there is no crime or world problems, than live in the real world with poverty and hunger. Ness made the virtual reality seem like a genuine possiblity for the future and I think that would be a scary time to be alive.
This book really had me scared to read on beacuse you can sense the build up and there are some heart stopping scenes. The ending of this book was completly unexpected to me and I was left wanting to shout GIVE ME MORE. I am still in shock.
I cried after reflecting on this book because I feel it gave a really powerful message. The title of this book is 'More Than This' which I didnt fully understand until I read the book. Seth commits suicide because he feels he has nothing left and has no one worth living for, however there is always more than what there appears to be. The people you care about may have acted wrongly or in a hurtful way but that doesn't mean they don't still love you. Everyone is facing their own battles every single day, and need to be reminded that there is more than the pain and sadness. Remember the happy times, remember what it's like to laugh and have fun. Remember what it's like to live.
Seth overcomes a common struggle of feeling sad and alone howeber he realises if you come out of that bad space you'll realise the people that matter to you the most have always been there for you and they always will be. Seth realises this and that's why he makes his decision at the end of the book.
Even though this book is telling an action packed adventure I feel it's really exploring Seths life and helping him face the reality that he needed to all along. This has become one of my favourite novels. Thank you Ness.

The demon king book review

Title: The Demon King
Author: Cinda Williams Chima
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Rating: 4 stars

Brief summery: This book follows two characters Rasia ana'Marianna the future queen of the queendom and Han an ex criminal street lord. Rasia needs answers about her queendom and Han needs to escape from his past. When there lives intertwine can they help each other.

Thoughts in a sentence:
Kathy: (Kathy hasn't read this book so she cant give you a sentence)
Bee: A big set up for the next books.

Review:
The demon king is an amazing first book in an epic fantasy series. If you are not familiar with reading epic fantasy you need to know that first books in series are usually the worst in the series because there is so much world building evolved, that the story can sometimes suffer. This book did very well of giving the information needed about the world but wasn't forcing it to quickly upon you and by about mid-way through you understood the world and the characters with in it and the story really picked up.

As the world they live in is a queendom so there was a big cast of bad ass female characters. The cast of characters was rather big but you still knew what was happening and who was who. in books with big casts it cant be as easy to follow because you don't know who everyone is and it can become confusing to the plot if you cant remember everyones name and relationship to one another (*cough* game of thrones *cough*) but this story really spent time defining every character and made sure they were easy to understand and follow throughout the corse of the book.

In every book told from duel point of views your going to pick you favourite voice, mine was certainly Rasia she was a very kick ass female character, yes she was the princess but she still wanted answers and she realised she was the only person that could get them. Although she did have her girly moments she was ultimately the dangerous adventure seeking one. Han on the other hand was more relaxed and trying to avoid trouble although trouble came to him he didn't really do anything that would make me call him a brave or worthy male protagonist.

This book was left so openly, I will definitely be picking up the second book because thats when the real action will start. I really recommend this to anyone who wants to start a fairly easy fantasy novel or if you just want a good read that you don't have to be to submerged into the story. I hope you enjoy it if you do pick it up. and you can tell us what you thought on our twitter page @Bathybooks

Throne of glass, book reveiw!

Title: Throne of glass
Author: Sarah j. Mass
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Rating:  4.25

Brief summery: In the mines of Endovier, Celanean is serving a life sentence. She was the worlds most notorious assassin, making one fatal mistake, getting caught. Captain Westfall offers her a deal, her freedom. she can win this in a tournament-fighting against the best thieves and assassins in the land. Win of lose she will be free but weather her freedom will come with her death or not is up to weather she can win the tournament.

Thoughts in a sentence:
Kathy: Action packed and a great first book to a series.
Bee: YA needs more books like this one.

Review:
This is the perfect example of how to write the first book in a ya series or any series for that matter. It is set in a fantasy world which dose require allot of world building, but Sarah j mass got the perfect blend of action, character development and world building spot on. This is a new YA series (I suppose soon we wont be able to call it new as the fourth book will be coming out in september. And thats including a novel bind up.)  but it doesn't feel like it has been around for that long. The love triangle doesn't take away from the action and adventure in this book, but i personally love it. It is not quite at the level of Tessa, Jem and Wills love triangle from the infernal devices but it is more than a clary, simon and Jace. (I feel like i am draw a lot of comparisons between the Cassandra clare books but they are nothing alike)

Celanean is the perfect female protagonist, she is like able even with her vocation as an assassin as she is not vicious or cruel about her killing 'she dose what she needs to do to survive' is how she puts it. She has the right levels of kick-assery and girl ness. Literally at the end of one chapter she'll be beating up a man twice her size and double her weight then and the start of the following chapter she will be trying on elegant ball gowns. She is smart and witty and doesn't rely on male support like main female protagonists do. I imagined her across between a Tessa grey from the infernal devices with her girly and snarky personality one minuet and a black widow from the avengers, like badass killing machine the next minuet. Prince Dorian i though was a very generic rebellious prince like you get in many other books her reminded me allot of Kai from the lunar Chronicles they were very similar. And Chaol was a stern man but he slowly warmed up and he had the most character arch throughout the whole book.

There are certain books that you can not put down, when you do it plays on your mind until you pick it back up. These books are the books that are big and loved by all for example divergent, harry potter, percy jackson and the hunger games this is certainly one of those books. There is so much action and different things going on you cant put it down. There is not a dull moment in this book therefore the pace and tempo of the book is so fast that you feel if your not reading it at that moment you could miss something because you are so submerged and involved within the story. Once you pick this book up you will not regret it and you'll never look back.

Four, A divergent collecttion

Title: Four, A divergent collection.
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: Harper Collins
Rating:  4.6 stars

Brief summery: Four short story's told from Fours point of view from the divergent series, Taking place before he meets tris through until the end of the divergent book all from Fours perspective. From Tobias life in Abnegation with Marcus and his initiate training.

Thoughts in a sentence:
Kathy: A new perspective of some of my favourite moments from divergent.
Bee: A better delivery of what Tobias should have been during allegiant.

*disclaimer, spoilers for divergent*
Review:
One part of the story that we loved is that the majority of the characters are a cross over from the divergent books. They are just a younger version of them selves as we would naturally know them for example Uriah he was only a small talking part as his brother was Zeke was a bigger part in the four book where as the was a smaller part in divergent. Allot of other people who work around the Dauntless compound stay the same for example Tori and Max.

Because divergent is a story we all love and know, this book docent need as much world building, and serves as a good prequel, it shows us how dauntless became what tris had to deal with and the changes that took place in such a short amount of time between the two years of four joining dauntless and tris joining. We learn allot more about Marcus Eaton and his treatment of tobias making us really see why four is so scared of him and why he is one of his four fears. To be honest I'm scared of Marcus after the graphic and descriptive scenes with him in.

In this book you sympathise allot more with Four than you do in any of the books from the divergent series. you see how he was before he transferred to dauntless, how what his father had done to him had altered his personality. and made him seam weak. in divergent four is always portrayed as the strong male character but i this it really shows his progression from a shy boy from abnegation to the dauntless initiate trainer. This really highlights how similar the characters of Tris and Four are to one another. And nearer the end of the book when tris came into dauntless basically the whole of the divergent story is condensed into 50 pages and you still feel like you have as much detail and knowledge as if you were reading the book divergent.

In conclusion this was an amazing book that just added to the strength of the divergent series it gave you a new insight and i think maybe some other series should do this (looking at you the hunger games we want a Peeta prequel). I think that this is a must read for any divergent fan or anyone who as read divergent it adds complexity and new Perspective. If they wanted to take more money out of us and make this into a movie with the same actors from divergent although it would be amazing because the story is amazing, i think they would have to recast four to a younger look alike, because Theo James cant even fool us to be an 18 year old he will not be kidding us as a 16 year old shy abnegation boy. over all we loved this book and it made me love tobias even more and tris. You must read this.
